September 9, 2003: 500 Days without Lost Time Due to Injury
A simple concept: How many days can we go without lost time due to accident or injury? We started out 3 years ago wondering if we could make it to 45 days. We have a very large tote board in a very visible place that we keep count of the days. When we made it to 45 days without any lost time due to accident or injury, we opened the vending machines to everyone for a day. At 365 days we had a picnic and handed out Saint Clair Press sweatshirts to everyone. Then we had a small incident, and we started the process all over. We currently are at 554 days. When we make it to 730 days or 2 years, we are going to treat everyone to a steak dinner. The wonderful thing about our program is we all monitor each other’s safety.
This program does not count a visit to the clinic as lost time. We want our associates to feel like they can go and be evaluated if there is an incident. Only if there are restrictions that we cannot accommodate or a “no work” order does the visit go against our days.
